…from Sheila Kehau O’Malley

as taught to her by Aunty Margaret Machado

Kumu Sheila and her mentor Aunty Margaret Machado

Lomilomi is the ancient healing art of Hawaiian massage. Traditionally the techniques of Lomilomi were guarded by the kahuna (masters) of the village. This sacred art form was passed down through the family line, to the child most suited to receive this knowledge. The secrets were never revealed to outsiders. To keep this tradition alive, a few kahuna have been motivated to teach selected students outside the family. Taught by her grandfather, the last of a royal kahuna line, Aunty Margaret Machado was chosen to carry on the tradition of Lomilomi. She has taught these techniques to students outside her family, to ensure the survival of this ancient art of healing, and to provide a valuable tool to those who would use this knowledge to help others.
